GreyhoundsOne of the oldest breeds of dogs, their history can be traced back to ancient Egypt. Or course, when most people think of greyhounds, they think "racing" - a sport that first cam to be in the late 1800s England. According to the National Greyhound Association, there are 48 greyhound race tracks in the United States. The dogs are ready for the "maiden race" at about 18 months, where they have six chances to place well. If not, well... It used to be that dogs who didn't make it past the maiden race, dogs who were injured, and dogs who otherwise were no longer used for racing or breeding were euthanized. However, within the last several years, greyhound adoption groups began to form, "saving" many of these dogs from certain death. Given the history of the sport, most people are amazed to learn that greyhounds are sweet, good-natured, and loving dogs. As sprinters, they can reach top speeds of 40 mph - but really, they'd rather just curl up on the couch with you. Contrary to popular belief, greyhounds are not hyper and are very low-maintenence. All they need is someone to love them. How can you help? Click here for some greyhound sites.
